Men Singled Out

Getting men to give more consideration to their health has been a medical challenge over the last few years.

The good news is that they have listened and are now more receptive to lifestyle improvements and preventative care.

Having made this quantum leap, including good eye health should be an integral part of their healthy living program.

Cataracts are a fact of life as we age and occur when proteins build up on the lens, making eye sight cloudy. Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision impairment.

Something to make men feel special, is a new study published in the Journal of Ophthalmology which has indicated a lower cataract risk in men who take daily multivitamins. The study was conducted by a research team at the Harvard Medical School.

Half of the 14,641 US male doctors participating in the study took a multivitamin, vitamin C, vitamin E and beta carotene supplements every day from 1997 to 2011. The other half took a placebo for the same amount of time. During the study period, 872 men who took the multivitamin developed cataracts, compared to 945 men who developed cataracts after taking the placebo.

Findings concluded a 9 percent lower risk of developing cataracts during the course of the study, and a 13 percent lower risk of developing the most common aging-related cataract, nuclear cataract.

“If multivitamins really do reduce the risk of cataract, even by a modest 10 percent, this rather small reduction would nonetheless have a large public health impact,” study’s lead research author William Christen, ScD. stated.

It’s something to think about men and personalEYES clinics carry a range of vitamins which have been developed to encourage good eye health. We also recommend the use of quality antioxidants & wearing UV blocking sunglasses to reduce the incidence of cataracts.
